OK, you.
Week 27.
Remember it.
Because this week’s playlist is quite a ride. We’re very smug about it.
We’re particularly pleased with our discovery of a brand new band from Austin, TX called Eek! Bandits. Don’t let the now expected quirky indie name fool you. There’s some serious talent behind that daft moniker. Hunt them down. Buy their album. Go to their shows. They have the potential to be big.

Well, first off, thanks for your wonderful words about The Soil and The Sun. They *are* very special, aren’t they? That song you played is the one they have closed their set with both times I’ve seen them play. And it is a powerful piece live. You can’t adequately imagine it from the demo recording, I fear. But it does give a glimmer as to what Alex and Ben let loose on their audience.
Your picks this week couldn’t have been more obscure, now could they, darlin? I think I knew only 5 going into it, and one of them was what I gave you, ha! Highlights of the show: That second track, 7 Worlds Collide’s “Bodhisvatta Blues” was an awesome song! I loved the vocals, loved the psychodelic trip out, loved the keyboards, very Elf Powerish, groovy, to my ears. Fake Problems’ “Don’t Worry Baby,” yes yes yes, and just the right amount of alt-country I love. Press on Randy’s “Dog’s Go Blind” had such sweet harmonies, and AA Bondy was gorgeous as per expected.
This Joshua James. I’m glad you decided to put him in, I know what you mean, cause he is maybe predictable, but yes good I think. I’ll go see on Oct. 2 and let you know… there’s definitely more to it than the standard, overproduced major label sound there. Maybe the issue is that he’s just way too good looking, eh?
(kidding, I mean all that about the music, of course!)
That Roses Kings Castles’ song has a cute opening line and it’s quirky and fresh but it made me wonder, is that all tho? Novelty? I’d have to hear the rest of the album. And why the hell haven’t I heard The horse’s Ha??? You keep one of my own local acts from me? Well that track was busy as fuck and really wonderfully crazy. I loved the instrumental bits and the vocals as they were used as the bumpers to set those bigger sections off. I’ve been really loving that format more and more. I’m Your Autopilot’s “We’ve Been Here Before” was really simple but i really like the melody and the syncopation in it and then to be surprised by that electro interlude, was just wow!
You surprised the hell outta me with Pocketbooks wow, again–just wow…. didn’t expect THAT at all. That’s all I can say. I never expected you to work that kind of song into a Waiting Room show.
And the Jamie T. I think you’ll guess that I WANT THIS !!!! I’ve also turned my good friend Chris Laing onto it for his Buttoned Down Disco DJ nights (pardon the plug), “soul class concrete and gravel, all we’ve got to keep us together” awesome lyrics… love that so very fucking much
great Sunday listening, kisses! xoxo
Well, that certainly made me smile
cheers Tarticles. Where do I fucking begin with that?
Yes, I’m really sinking into The Soil & The Sun stuff. They do need to get that live energy captured properly — I can hear the potential, but it’s just knocked off a little by the dampened demo sound. Not their fault, of course, but shake them by the ankles until their sense falls out of their pockets & then force feed it to them until its coming out of their noses.
The 7 Worlds Collide project is a bit odd, to be honest — suffers a little from middle aged dad dancing song structure/lyrics & production. BUT there are a few crackers on the album & Bodhisvatta Blues certainly is one of them — Ed O’Brien is clearly all over that fucker.
Fake Problems are another band that suffer a little from overt alt.country bar room rawk sensibilities, but when they reign it in they nail it.
Press On Randy are, frankly, very bloody clever. Their EP is excellent. There’s a brilliant track scheduled for next week.
A.A. Bondy is simply genius. I love the new album.
Joshua James. Hmmm. Yes. Just not sure if he’s too Katie Melua, you know? Let me know what he does on stage. If there’s a point at which he asks the audience to to clap the rhythm then throw your shoe at him & leave.
Roses Kings Castles is a tough one to call because the quality of the records thus far have all been at demo level & as such a lot of the tunes & cleverness is lost under the mighty mighty presence of his somewhat arch voice. I understand what you mean by novelty. There’s an almost ‘quirky by numbers’ feel to the melodies. But. I love it. Give me him over Pete Cockerty any fucking day.
The Horse’s Ha are brilliant — I am amazed you didn’t know about them. I never brought them up as I took it as a given. Map Of Stars has been floating in & out of the playlist possibilities for weeks & weeks — just didn’t have the vehicle to springboard it off, because it is such an in your face wig out. That A Fine Frenzy track, which I know you don’t like
, was perfect.
I am Your Autopilot? Think you said it all there, really.
The Pocketbooks are one of those bands that lurch from too brightly produced twee to sub standard twee. However, when they hit the balance it’s perfect indie pop. I love that track.
Now. Jamie T.. Yes. Fast becoming my record of the year. Even overtaking the likes of Jordaan Mason & The Horse Museum, simply because of the inventiveness of the musical underlay & the fucking genius lyrics. Expect more of his brilliant tracks in weeks to come.
No thoughts on Eek! Bandits? I have to say I have fallen for them massively. But that’s probably because I now have access to a few more new tracks & demos. I fucking love At Least I’ve Got Friends. Love it. BUT. You wait until next week when I play their latest newbie. Fucking hell it’s good. These are two college grads living in a Tulsa studio recording their new album. Fucking kids, man! Their historical musical knowledge is quite something. I really do think these guys will be big. Watch this space…
Until next week. Don’t have nightmares.

Was that track #15? oh shit it was! My notes reveal only one word, hahaha sorry luv. Well you know they grow on me… it’s difficult sometimes, but then I still haven’t come around to your Horse Museum guys either. I think these bands are wooing you with their musical know-how! (j/k, you of all people, cannot be woo’d musically, god knows I’ve tried for months, ha)
We’ll see if next week that Eek! Bandits? works out. I’m open minded xoxo
As Prince once said, kinda, the track by Eek! Bandits next week certainly punches a higher floor. Make sure you plug all your cavities.
